Just in time for the high-end Christmas market, Sony will be launching a new toy in November: digital binoculars with built-in high-definition cameras, to be known as ‘Vinoculars’.
The gadgets, to sell between £1500 and £2000 apiece, will use GPS to record location of filming (to allow users to prove where they were), stereo sound, autofocus, ‘steady shot’ technology and TV playback, including 3D for 3D televisions.
Sony think it will revolutionise the market. But with high quality, relatively inexpensive digital cameras widely in use, is there a need for such binoculars? Can this be seen as another Beta/VHS battle? Or is this truly a glimpse into the future?
